Covid-19 Updates in Cambodia

As of 14 June 2021, 38,969 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Cambodia, 32,967 patients have been declared cured and 348 people has been dead. The first reported case was confirmed on 27 January 2020.

As the global economy has been deeply affected by COVID-19, Cambodia has also suffered from its repercussions. The three most affected sectors have been tourism, export-oriented manufacturing and construction, since they have jointly contributed more than 70% of growth and 39.4% of total paid employment in the country in 2019 (source: The World Bank). Over 100 factories have announced the suspension of production, with more than 100,000 workers being laid off. Restrictions to travel are still in effect and the measures to enter to Cambodia are very strict. More details can be found here.

The authorities have also introduced emergency measures to contain the outbreak and provide fiscal assistance to affected households, workers, and enterprises. The announcements by the Royal Government can be found here.

While the pandemic has severely hit Cambodia, a u-shaped economic recovery is likely to occur. The forecast of the Asian Development Bank indicates an economic recession of 5.5% in 2020, but also a fast recovery in 2021, with economic growth predicted at 5.9% in that year. According to this projection, Cambodia will be the 5th fastest–growing economy of Southeast Asia. Since it has become an export-driven economy, Cambodia’s recovery will greatly depend on the capacity of the Chinese, European and American economies to return to their normal state.
